Important work was slowed by manual searching
Legal research required people to work through large bodies of precedent. Translation moved across multiple languages. Metadata, citations and related references often needed careful manual handling.
Teams also held knowledge in separate places, which meant that people could repeat searches or rebuild context that someone else had already assembled.
